The IAFF is welcoming a new Colorado affiliate – Lower Valley Fire District Local 5265 — to the union. The fire district is about 10 miles northwest of Grand Junction and extends from the City of Fruita to the Utah-Colorado border.

Legislation to ensure fire fighters who die or are permanently and totally disabled due to COVID-19 receive full federal benefits passed the U.S. Senate unanimously. S 3607, the Safeguarding America’s First Responders (SAFR) Act of 2020, was introduced only days ago by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Cory Booker (D-NJ).

The IAFF welcomes Paradise Township, MI Local 5261, one of the union’s newest affiliates. Paradise Township is a growing area just outside of Traverse City.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting every aspect of our lives. Exercise, good nutrition and stress management are all critical for fire fighters and emergency medical personnel to stay well and continue responding in their communities.

The application period for Fiscal Year 2020 Assistance to Firefighters COVID-19 Supplemental Program (AFG-S) begins April 28. The deadline for applications is 5:00 p.m. (ET) May 15, 2020. The $100 million in available funding will help provide personal protective equipment to fire fighters and first responders who are managing emergencies during the coronavirus pandemic.

Workers Memorial Day and National Day of Mourning on April 28 commemorate workers who have been injured, killed or suffer illness as a result of occupational accidents and hazards. 

Efforts by the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters (CPFF) to lobby and collaborate with a special task force have paid off. The Colorado General Assembly has passed and the governor has signed legislation to help ensure the fiscal health of the fire and police disability and retirement plans.
