Throughout October, affiliates across the United States and Canada promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month in their communities, and wearing pink T-shirts – while raising money for breast cancer research – has become a signature feature of these campaigns.

A board of arbitrators has handed down a landmark decision that requires the city of Sudbury, Ontario, to add more on-duty personnel at the fire station in its Val Therese community, citing clear health and safety risks linked to deploying fewer than four fire fighters to structure fires.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Don’t Break Up the T-Band Act, HR 451, with a decisive bipartisan vote of 397 to 5. Representative Elliot Engel (D-NY) sponsored the bill, which repeals a 2012 law directing the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to auction off the T-Band frequencies starting in 2021.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 1646, the Helping Emergency Responders Overcome (HERO) Act by voice vote. Introduced in 2019 by Representative Ami Bera (D-CA), this high-priority legislation for the IAFF addresses the real need for increased mental health resources within the fire service.

During a time of great uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Professional Fire Fighters of Alabama (PFFA) has successfully worked to increase retirement benefits for members.

As winds and dry, hot conditions continue to fuel wildfires throughout the state of California, the IAFF has been closely monitoring six fires due to their proximity to the homes of IAFF members. Already, at least 12 members have lost their homes in these fires.
