As winds and dry, hot conditions continue to fuel wildfires throughout the state of California, the IAFF has been closely monitoring six fires due to their proximity to the homes of IAFF members. Already, at least 12 members have lost their homes in these fires.
The six fires include the El Dorado, Valley, Creek, Bobcat, Oak and North Complex fires.
“Our priorities always lie with the needs of the membership,” says General President Harold Schaitberger. “I am very proud of the work the 10th district is already doing, reaching out to members and providing assistance as needed.”
“We are in the process of distributing disaster relief and reaching out to all potentially affected members,” says 10th District Vice President Frank Lima. “Some of our members have not been displaced but need assistance. We are addressing those concerns as well.”
While the busiest months of the California wildfire season have yet to arrive, the state has already seen a record-breaking 3.1 million total acres of land scorched by flames this year.
These current set of fires have already burned several thousand acres and thousands of structures. One fire, the North Complex fire, stretches across Plumas, Butte and Yuba counties and has resulted in the deaths of at least 10 citizens.
