Elected officials are committed to serving the public, while union leaders vigorously advocate for workers’ rights.

That’s where Jayson French, a seasoned fire fighter, paramedic, District 12 Field Service Representative, and former president of the West Palm Beach, FL Local 727 steps in, bringing nearly two decades of invaluable experience.

“I ran for the Village of Tequesta City Council Seat 1,” French said. “It’s a small, but influential town in northern Palm Beach County.”

Tequesta officials revealed in January that Julie Mitchell, a previous contender alongside French, had withdrawn from the election, resulting in Seat 1 being uncontested.

“I began with three challengers, and now I have zero,” said French.

French says the IAFF’s A. Michael Mullane Political Training Academy and the Communications Training Academy helped to enhance his communication skills, providing resources to kickstart his campaign.

The immense support I received, from filing to my training, leveraging my experience as a District Field Service Representative and union president truly allowed me to come out of the gate swinging.

“I was well-prepared for the demands of local campaigns, utilizing my relationships, strategic planning, and early preparation, putting me months ahead of my opponent,” said French.

Recognizing the similarities between union involvement and holding public office, French is now inspiring others to venture down a similar path.

“Have a plan and understand that you are not alone, and you have your IAFF union leaders and staff here to help you,” he said. “Lean on them, get the education, and then use it to the advantage of yourself and your community.”
