Two Canadian IAFF union leaders have been elected to the IAFF Human Relations Committee (EHRC) highlighting an important step for inclusion and representation.

Vancouver, BC Local 18 President Katrina Davison and Oshawa, ON Local 465 President Peter Dyson were elected at the recent Canadian Policy Conference and will represent Canada in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the fire service.

The EHRC consists of 18 elected members who help develop and recommend policies and procedures for affiliates, working to improve relationships and member education on human relations issues.

“Personally, it’s an honour to be trusted with that responsibility,” said Davison.

Davison was first elected to the committee in 2021 and now serves as EHRC Vice Chair.

“Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to support Locals across the IAFF and work alongside leaders who are committed to strengthening our union from the inside out,” said Davison. “Being on the EHRC is about showing up for our members, not just when it’s easy, but when things get tough.”

As Local 18 president, Davison says the EHRC’s work is an extension of her role within her Local. “Whether it’s helping resolve internal division, supporting members through conflict, or making sure every fire fighter feels like they belong in this job, the work of the EHRC is about protecting our strength and unity.”

Dyson, who has led Local 465 since 2018 and serves on the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association’s board, said he’s excited to give back to the IAFF and its members in a whole new way.

“This union has given me so much since I started my career, and as an open and proud gay fire fighter, I bring both professional and lived experience rooted in the Canadian context, giving me a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities we face in building a union that is stronger, more welcoming and truly united,” said Dyson.

He says his recent election to the EHRC is an opportunity to continue building a more inclusive union, while helping every member feel a sense of belonging.

“From the newest recruit to the most senior officer – that sense of belonging doesn’t just happen; it must be built through intentional effort, respect, and listening, but at the heart of it, human relations is about the shared human experience and how we interact with each other,” said Dyson.

While Dyson is eager to meet his fellow committee members and learn more about the committee’s ongoing efforts and future goals, both he and Davison say they are ready to continue building on the work already underway.

“After speaking to the IAFF Executive Board earlier this year, it’s clear there’s momentum behind this work,” said Davison. “I want to make sure we keep pushing forward, for our members, for our leaders, and for the future of the fire service.”
