How to join the IAFF

Learn how to join the IAFF through a chartered Local and what steps to take if your department is not currently represented.

To become a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), you must join or organize a chartered IAFF Local union.

Individuals do not join the IAFF directly at the international level. Membership is established through an affiliated Local.

If your department is already represented

If an IAFF Local represents your department or agency:

  1. Contact your Local union leadership

  2. Complete any required membership paperwork

  3. Begin paying dues as established by the Local

Your Local can provide details about eligibility, dues, and the enrollment process.

If your department is not represented

If your workplace is not currently represented by the IAFF, you may be eligible to organize and affiliate with the IAFF.

Organizing allows full-time, paid employees engaged in firefighting and/or emergency medical or rescue service activities to form a Local union and seek IAFF affiliation.

Once you contact us, we will direct your request to a representative in your district who will provide information about next steps.

Not sure where to start?

If you are unsure whether your department is represented or how to begin the process, contact us and we will connect you with the appropriate district representative.
