Canadian IAFF affiliates raise funds every year for Muscular Dystrophy Canada through rooftop campouts and other initiatives. But fire fighters can also support MDC’s mission by volunteering for positions on its board and on committees, or by just being there for those affected by neuromuscular disorders, says the charity’s CEO.

The honour is based on criteria including individual nominees’ impact on the mental health of their organization and community, the number of people they have impacted, and their commitment to decreasing mental health stigma.

Fire fighter and Local 162 Vice President Genna McMillan said it didn’t cross her mind to not put her name forward when she learned another fire fighter was in need of a living liver donor.
