Ronald Stewart, a fire fighter and paramedic with Tulsa, OK Local 176, was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives after winning more than 50 percent of the votes in the June Democratic primary election. His seat – District 73 – did not draw candidates from other political parties.

Stewart brings nearly two decades of firefighting experience to his new role, including 11 years serving District 73.

“The feeling of being elected to office is indescribable,” said Stewart. “Having earned the trust of the community is an honor.”

He credits the IAFF and Local 176 for serving as launchpads to his political career. Stewart was a 2023 graduate of the IAFF’s Political Training Academy.

“Local 176 was the first to endorse and generously contribute to my campaign with a max donation,” Stewart said. “The IAFF’s endorsement and support, alongside contributions from OKC, OK Local 157 and even Houston, TX Local 341, were pivotal in reaching voters and securing a victory. With only 142 votes of separation between my opponent and I, every voter reached was critical.”

IAFF FIREPAC contributions also played a crucial role in fundraising efforts.

“The money that is donated by our members in support of FIREPAC’s initiatives has been stewarded extremely well, in my opinion, and the proof is in the elections,” said Stewart. “The IAFF and many Locals have been able to assist with getting the right people in office and as a result we thrive.”

Local 176 President Matt Lay commended Stewart’s victory, saying, “As a Local, we are so proud of Ron’s remarkable journey from battling blazes to representing Tulsa at the State Capitol – a testament to his dedication and service to the community.”

Stewart will be sworn into office in November. He will continue to hold his position with the Tulsa Fire Department.
