The eagerly awaited tradition of Noche Buena, translating to “Good Night,” is celebrated in Spain, the Philippines, and many Latin American nations on December 24.

For Lieutenant Alex Acosta of the Metropolitan Dade County Association of Fire Fighters Local 1403, the cherished custom involving the gathering of families and friends for drinks, music, and an elaborate celebratory dinner, is something he and his family eagerly anticipate each year.

“We celebrate Christmas, and Noche Buena is essentially Christmas Eve. Noche Buena is a tradition, and we have a family gathering with traditional food that we make every year,” he said. “I have been doing this since I was a kid with my father, and it’s a tradition I’ve carried on to my son now.”

The holiday feast includes a diverse array of dishes, mixing traditional and distinctive foods, like roast pig.

“We marinate it the night before and it usually takes about 5-6 hours to cook the pig. Family comes over and we celebrate that way,” said Acosta.

Battalion Chief Christopher Ackerman, a Local 1403 member, mentions the holiday is a significant celebration for fire crews and the surrounding Miami community

“In the past, some firehouses would cook an entire pig, but it has become less and less common because it just turned into a busy night for us, particularly with many people cooking with open fires,” said Ackerman. “But throughout the day, while fire fighters are responding to calls, people will let them in and it’s a very festive day.”

“In the South Florida community, Noche Buena stands out as a meaningful holiday celebration for many of our members,” said Walter Dix, 12th District Vice President. “Our membership is a melting pot, each with their own cherished holiday traditions.”

A joyful time to usher in Christmas with loved ones, Acosta says this tradition encapsulates the true spirit of Christmasbeing surrounded by family and loved ones.

“I left Cuba when I was 6, and it was carried out by my family. The way we cook the pig, it is still the same as my dad, his dad, and I want to keep that tradition alive.”
