Jason Smith, Broward County, FL Local 4321 president emeritus, has been elected a Cooper City Commissioner. It will be his first time in public office.

Cooper City is in South Florida’s Broward County. The mayor and the City Commission serve as the city’s governing body.

“Congratulations to Brother Smith on a well-run campaign,” 12th District Vice President Walt Dix said. “He has been an outstanding leader in his department and with my home Local, Broward Local 4321. I know he will do great things for Cooper City and its citizens.”

Smith began serving Broward County and his union in 2003, when he joined the department and Local 4321. He rose through the department’s ranks, serving in specialized locations such as Port Everglades and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. He is now a battalion chief.

As union president from 2019-2022, Smith worked to build relationships with the Broward County Commission and city commissions across the county, including Cooper City.

His work with the local governments proved especially helpful during the COVID-19 pandemic, as he addressed staffing issues and helped negotiate a multi-year collective bargaining agreement.

“The Cooper City Commission has already been doing a great job making sure our city matches its slogan, ‘Some Place Special.’ I am looking forward to doing my part,” Smith said. “That will include deciding the best course of action with the city’s only fire station and whether we need a second one to better serve the 34,000 citizens.”
