Canadian IAFF locals continued a remarkable 64-year history of support for Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC), raising $1.3 million for the charity in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019.
The support from IAFF locals, which is made possible by members who donate their time to fundraising events supported by a generous public, helps MDC deliver programs and services to people living with neuromuscular disorders and their families.
Last year, 102 Canadian locals held fundraising events for MDC, including boot drives, stair climbs, ladder sits, golf tournaments, truck pulls and rooftop campouts.
Edmonton, AB Local 209 was the largest single fundraiser for MDC last year, raising $129,063. Fredericton, NB Local 1053 was named MDC’s Fire Department of the Year in recognition of its work and Montreal, QC Local 125 merited attention with its Highrise Challenge Stair Climb.
The programs and services supported by affiliates’ fundraising include equipment to improve daily life, family and caregiver retreats, emotional and educational support and access to vital resources.
