Wildfires, once thought to only concern fire fighters in the southern and western parts of the United States, are becoming a fast-growing threat across North America.

Delegates and alternates unanimously adopted a resolution to provide $500,000 annually to expand and strengthen the IAFF’s ongoing fight against occupational cancer.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is improving internal operations and tackling historic issues like working conditions and retirement and the emerging threats of wildfire response, cancer, and behavioral health.

The IAFF’s 56th Convention officially kicks off Monday, Aug. 8 in the Canadian capital of Ottawa, but the union’s principal officers, executive board, and committee members gathered earlier this week to refine the business and agenda ahead.

Batesville Fire and EMS became the latest local to affiliate with the IAFF after receiving its charter on July 30. 

Richmond, VA Local 995 members and other city employees now have the right to unionize and collectively bargain. The Richmond City Council voted 8-0 in favor of the ordinance on July 25. 

A new name for the IAFF’s provincial affiliate in Alberta is a better reflection of the association’s members and their roles.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), has re-evaluated firefighting and classified fire fighter occupational exposure as a group 1 carcinogen, stating there is sufficient evidence for cancer in humans.
