A new school year is approaching and one Storey County, Nevada student is starting college with a little help from Storey County Local 4227 fire fighters.
Since 2010, Storey County Local 4227 has awarded scholarships of up to $1,000 to select students in the community as a way to support and encourage higher education. Recipients are graduating seniors from Virginia City High School and are chosen based on their academic achievements, goals, extracurricular activities and references.
“It’s important to continue to recognize and support the hard work of young adults in our community,” says Auggie Arroyo, a member of Local 4227 and the scholarship coordinator.
This year’s recipient, Jordyn Ballard, will study education at the University of Nevada-Reno. She hopes earn her degree and teach at Hugh Gallagher Elementary School in Storey County.
“We are proud of Jordyn and her aspirations to further her education,” says Arroyo. “We look forward to her success at the University of Nevada and in a career where she will have a hand in educating future generations.”
