Iowa Professional Fire Fighters (IPFF) Vice President and Burlington, IA Local 301 President Ky Duttlinger has died after a 10-month battle with colon cancer.

“Ky positively impacted the lives of his brothers and sisters on the job, and the Burlington community he proudly protected, during his career as a fire fighter and union leader,” said General President Edward Kelly. “Our prayers are with his friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”

“Brother Duttlinger was a strong union leader who not only fought on behalf of the interests of his own local, but all Iowa members,” said 2nd District Vice President Mark Woolbright. “He was a true asset to the IAFF’s 2nd District. He will be greatly missed.”

Answering the call to serve, Duttlinger joined the Burlington Fire Department nearly 26 years ago. He earned the respect of his fellow fire fighters right away and became a very active member of Burlington Local 301.

Known for fighting hard for better working conditions, wages, and benefits, Duttlinger first served as Local 301 secretary and vice president before he was elected president of the local. He held that position for 14 years.

Duttlinger was elected IPFF trustee in 2010 and then vice president in 2015.

“Ky was a steadfast, ferocious advocate for his fellow fire fighters. He would not rest until membership needs were properly addressed,” said IPFF President Ryan Hanghian. “He was the epitome of a union leader, a confidant, and professional fire fighter. It is a difficult time for his fire fighter family, but we will get through it together.”

Duttlinger will be remembered not only for his strong advocacy on behalf of fire fighters but also for his love of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

Memorial arrangements will be posted when they become available.
