In an ongoing commitment to fire fighters’ well-being and workplace rights, FIREPAC works to build collective power by backing campaigns and candidates that prioritize fire fighter concerns.
This support was evident in Indianapolis, where Mayor Joe Hogsett’s historic third term win was bolstered by Local 416’s strong backing, marking a milestone victory after four decades.
Local 416 Vice President Shannon Whiteley said Hogsett faced challenges posed by Republican candidate Jefferson Shreve’s substantial self-funded campaign, which included a personal donation of $13.5 million – more than double the contributions received by Hogsett. In response, Local 416 contributed $75,000 to Hogsett’s campaign, with crucial additional backing from the International Association of Fire Fighters FIREPAC.
“Every contribution was crucial in countering the financial strength of his opponent,” Whiteley said.
Whiteley reached out to 8th District Vice President Mark Sanders, securing a significant FIREPAC contribution through the IAFF. Union initiatives included fundraisers, distribution of endorsement fliers among members, active participation in Election Day activities, and hosting or endorsing several of the mayor’s events.
“We actively participate in fundraisers, attend city council and mayoral events, and make our presence known at council meetings,” said Whiteley. “By working hand in hand with officials and engaging in city projects, we strengthen our relationships and contribute to the betterment of the community.”
During Hogsett’s previous terms, there were significant accomplishments for fire fighters. “We have a new state-of-the-art health and wellness center, a new training academy for Indianapolis, inclusion of airport fire fighters in the pension system, and the successful organization of emergency dispatchers with their first contracts,” Whiteley said.
He’s now encouraging other members to get politically involved while highlighting the crucial role of participation in local and state politics to drive action. “Collaborate and support officials who advocate for the interests of your members. Working together ensures mutual success in achieving common goals,” he said.
