Members of Nampa, ID Local 804 know how important internal communications is for maintaining a strong union. As part of the local’s efforts to get members and their families more involved, it held a Fire Ops 101 event to spouses.

“We wanted to encourage membership participation in union activities and to give families a clear understanding of what the job is like,” says Local 804 President Nick Adams. “It was a great success and we got a lot of great feedback.”

One spouse says, “The situations my husband faces are more disturbing and physically taxing than I realized before.”

Another says, “I never thought my husband’s job was a cake walk, but I do have a much deeper appreciation for it.”

The 30 participants conducted gear checks before completing four scenarios, including a rope lower, residential search with smoke, vehicle extrication and a hose drill.

The event was supported by Fire Chief Karl Malott, a retired member of Local 804, and neighboring locals.
