IAFF Response to Virginia Beach Active Shooter Incident

June 4 • 2019

When a city employee opened fire inside the Virginia Beach Municipal Building May 31, members of Virginia Beach, VA Local 2924 were among the first on the scene assisting victims.

“Our members responded to what was no doubt a horrific scene,” says General President Harold Schaitberger. “I am proud of their efforts to save lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and the families of the victims.”

Outgoing Virginia Beach Local 2924 President William Bailey says there were several units on scene, all of which included Local 2924 members with an EMT-B certification or higher.

Per active shooter protocol, these members are part of the tactical response team that goes inside the building to assist victims and bring them to safety.

The IAFF immediately deployed a peer support team, along with a mental health specialist, to assist Local 2924 members who responded to the shooting.

“The IAFF is providing a great service,” says Bailey. “The team has met with the members and advised that they are here and available to talk. We are glad they are here.”
