Timing is everything, and for Nicholette Claveau, a retired fire fighter and paramedic from St. Petersburg, FL Local 747, a stroke of luck arrived just when it was needed most. Claveau, who dedicated 31 years to serving her community with St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue, was among the top winners at the Union Plus Awards – a nationwide event recognizing union members who go above and beyond in their professions and communities.
“I’ve entered the Union Plus contest for years, but never thought I’d win,” said Claveau, who retired in 2017.
Claveau, along with Demarko Cabral, president of Bedford, MA Local 2310, were among the 30 winners selected from across the country to receive a $1,000 cash prize. The award recognized their exceptional work both in the fire service and in the community.
As a dedicated Honor Guard member and Task Force 3 participant, Claveau’s commitment to service extends far beyond her role as a fire fighter and paramedic. She helped initiate an annual toy drive through St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue, providing toys to local children in need. It’s a tradition that continues to benefit the community to this day.
But recently, Claveau found herself on the receiving end of help. After Hurricane Helene swept through the East Coast, causing widespread devastation, her own home was damaged. “This couldn’t have come at a better time,” she said. “I’m using the prize money to make repairs.”
Union Plus President Mitch Stevens praised the winners for their contributions. “Unions Power America is more than just a contest. It’s our way of acknowledging the extraordinary work that union members do every day,” Stevens said.
This was the third annual Unions Power America campaign, which included the Unions Power America Contest, Unions Power America Sweepstakes, Union Moment of the Year, and the Labor Day live event announcing the winners.
