IAFF members with Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic health insurance now have in-network access to IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery (COE) services. The two entered a contract Sept. 1, expanding access to specialized, fire fighter-focused care for IAFF members in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and Delaware.
“This is excellent news for the members of my local and the surrounding IAFF locals,” said Daniel Brong, Washington, D.C. Local 36 Peer Support Coordinator. “Behavioral health services, especially paid out-of-pocket, can be very expensive. Now that Kaiser Permanente is providing coverage, our members will be much more likely to ask for and accept help when they need it.”
What this means for fire fighters covered by Kaiser in the Mid-Atlantic:
- In-network access to the COE: Fire fighters with Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic coverage can receive COE services as a covered benefit with a referral.
- Faster approvals: COE staff can help navigate Kaiser’s referral process to get members approved as quickly as possible.
- 24/7 admissions and frequent immediate openings: The center accepts admissions around the clock to meet urgent needs.
- Fire fighter-specific care: Evidence-based treatment tailored to the unique stressors and exposures of the fire service, including behavioral health, recovery, and wellness supports.
Members will need to meet Kaiser’s referral requirements for specialized treatment. The COE encourages IAFF members to call (855) 900-8437 so staff can assist with the assessment approval process.
“This partnership reflects the power of synergy when organizations come together with a shared mission – to serve those who serve us,” said David Thomas, Site CEO of the IAFF Center of Excellence. “Through collaboration with Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic, we’re ensuring that access to best-in-class behavioral health treatment is not just available, but accessible to fire service members in our region.”
The COE is considered an in-network provider with every major insurer – including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem, UnitedHealthcare/Optum, Cigna, Aetna and now Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic – broadening pathways to care for IAFF members.
