Saratoga Springs, NY Local 343 fire fighters hit the ice for the fifth holiday season.

Saratoga Springs, NY Local 343 fire fighters hit the ice for the fifth holiday season to collect toys and money for local charities working to ensure children in need have Christmas presents this year.

Local 343’s hockey team hosted two games. The first was against the Saratoga Springs’ police department on Nov. 18. The charge for admission was one unwrapped toy, but donations were also accepted. The event collected more than 1,000 toys and over $2,000 to benefit the Franklin Community Center’s Holiday Assistance program.

Local 343 member Chris Stewart, the event’s chief organizer, said this year was the biggest one yet.

“The fire truck that delivered the toys to the kids was packed beyond capacity. That’s a good problem to have,” Stewart said. “We really appreciate everyone who came out to donate and to see us play.”

The donated toys gifted to the kids included Barbies, Hot Wheels, coloring books, and board games.

The second hockey toy drive was against Worcester, MA Local 1009 fire fighters on Dec. 16. This time, it was a “teddy bear toss,” for which people donated teddy bears and other stuffed animals. All items were donated to local charities just in time for Christmas.

“We just hope we made this holiday season a little brighter for the kids who need it.” Stewart said.
