On the second day of the 57th IAFF Convention, General Vice President of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Thomas J. Flynn delivered a heartfelt and inspiring speech, drawing on his extensive experience in the labor movement to highlight the importance of union solidarity and a hopeful future for workers.

Sharing a personal connection with General President Edward Kelly and the city of Boston, Flynn said, “Boston is a city of parishes and parks. While GP Kelly and I explored different parks, we were raised with the same values of loyalty, faith, family, and freedom. Boston is more than just a city; it’s where every kid dreams of becoming a police officer, carpenter, or fire fighter. These values are what drive us in our work every day.”

Starting his journey with Carpenters Local Union 67 in Dorchester, Mass., he has since served in key labor roles, including as executive director of the New England Carpenters Labor-Management Program and trustee for the Boston Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund. “When I first walked into Local Union 67, I never imagined the path that would unfold,” he said.

Currently serving as chair of the North Atlantic States Carpenters Benefits Funds and General Vice President of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC), he lauded the strong connection between the IAFF and UBC. “Both organizations are dedicated to fighting for fair wages, job safety, and benefits,” he said. “Our shared goals and values unite us.”

Noting the continued solidarity and advocacy for workers’ rights, Flynn said, “The IAFF and UBC share a common purpose — representing our members. We face similar priorities, challenges, and opportunities, and our strategies and tactics are closely aligned.”
