HONORABLE MENTION: “Hero firefighter recovers
slowly from burns”
This story highlights the heroic efforts of Baltimore fire fighter and paramedic Jeff Novack, who responded to an apartment fire and rescued an 86-year-old woman from the burning building. Novack rushed back into the building after he heard screams from the third floor, but became trapped. To escape, he broke a window and fell three stories to a cement walkway. Novack was hospitalized for more than a month, including two weeks at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The three closest fire engine were on other calls or closed due to rolling firehouse closures.

Fire fighters battle a four-alarm blaze in the Krell Lighting and Electrical Supplies showroom. The powerful fire tore a hole in the building’s roof and caused authorities to evacuate more than 50 people from a nearby neighborhood. The warehouse had been a part of the community for nearly four decades.

In April 2010, fire fighter and paramedic Jeffrey Novack rescued Lucille Ziglier who had become trapped within her apartment during a fire to the building. Continuing to search the building after this rescue, Novak became trapped and was forced to jump out of the third story window, suffering injuries from both the burns and the landing. The fire was set by arsonist Katina Garcia. This clip shows the emotional reunion of Novack and Siglier at the court arraignment of the arsonist.

SECOND PLACE: What You Can Get at the Dollar Store”
In a letter read on the air by AM 640 radio host John Oakley, York Regional Police Platoon Sergeant Rob Cullen describes the scene at the home of a 78-year-old retired fire fighter who died of a heart attack in his basement apartment. The 30-year veteran of the fire department was an avid collector of history, especially Toronto history, but authorities had no next of kin to notify of his passing. The deceased fire fighter was going to be carried out in a plastic bag in front of his neighbors, but Cullen made sure that didn’t happen. He instructed those on the scene to go to the local dollar store to buy a Canadian flag to help carry the fire fighter out of his home. The flag was draped across the body of Robert Wilson to honor his life and service.

FIRST PLACE: “Ten Lives Could Have Been Lost”
It was 4:00 a.m. on October 10 when fire fighters received a call from a box alarm. When fire crews arrived on to the scene they found residents screaming for help because they were trapped on the third and fourth floor of an apartment building. Fire fighters rescued 10 people before it became apparent that the roof of the building was going to collapse as they struggled to get the last person to safety. The fire fighters became trapped on a metal balcony four stories up as flames poured from the windows just feet from their backs, choking them with smoke and heat. Fire fighters who were on the ground used high-powered hoses to blast water at the flames, hitting their colleagues to save them from the heat. The building’s entire roof eventually collapsed onto the fourth floor.

Tower Ladder 1 came to the Pahrump Valley Fire Department in 2006 from Ladder 117 in Queens, New York. Tower Ladder 1 made 40,000 runs and alarms while serving the FDNY. It even served on September 11, 2001. In need of a good aerial truck, Tower Ladder 1 was sent to Canada for refurbishment. It serves 400 square miles in the Pahrump Valley area and has responded to residential and structural fires and rescue work. Stockton fire fighters became engaged in a legal battle with the City over its breast cancer awareness campaign activities when City officials closed a truck company and then shut down Local 456’s breast cancer awareness fundraising campaign. Fire fighters continued their efforts in the community, wearing their pink shirts proudly despite opposition from the City.
