Under the general direction of the Battalion Chief, the Fire Captain supervises firefighting companies in the suppression of fires, emergency medical services, fire prevention, and public education activities. This position oversees the maintenance of fire stations, equipment, apparatus, and related work as required; coordinates the scheduling of personnel, equipment, training, and work activity; coordinates line functions within administrative policy and does related work as required.

The Fire Chief directs, manages, and oversees all activities of the Fire Department in order to ensure 24-hour emergency service to the citizens of Pocatello and Bannock County. Activities of the department include, but are not limited to, fire & EMS response, community risk reduction, code enforcement, fire investigation, training, maintenance of facilities and apparatus, and general public safety.

The incumbent performs technical work providing advanced emergency medical services (Paramedic) for patients who experience medical problems in the field. Performs fire prevention and suppression functions, answers emergency calls, and operates and maintains Fire/EMS Department equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

Review and approve plans and specifications for fire suppression, fire detection, special hazards, high piled storage, hazardous material installations. Review building construction and site development plans for compliance with fire and life-safety codes and County ordinances.  Consult with and provide recommendations to architects, contractors, and the public.  Prepare reports regarding reviews of plans.  Make code interpretations as required.

Firefighters protect the people of Saint Paul through public education, fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services. They partner with the community to mitigate risks, and respond to all calls for service with skill, dedication, and compassion.

Testing process includes IAFF 3874 Monmouth & Ocean, 3610 West Windsor, 3824 Monroe Township and IAFF 3897. 

This position will protect Metro-North Railroad’s employees, customers, tenants, equipment, and infrastructure from injury, damage, and loss by maintaining a comprehensive & proactive fire/life safety program, responding to and mitigating fire/rescue/hazardous materials incidents, providing pre-hospital emergency medical services, and by working with both internal and external forces to safely and efficiently minimize service disruptions. Fire Engineers are responsible for driving and operating fire apparatus, performing skilled fire suppression and prevention activities, and assisting with company readiness under the Fire Captain’s guidance. Core duties include conducting fire prevention inspections of assigned occupancies, testing fire protection equipment, identifying hazardous conditions, and helping train personnel in fire safety procedures and fire code awareness.
