How to request IAFF support during a disaster

Guidance for Local unions on contacting the IAFF for coordination and support during disasters or large-scale emergency incidents.

In the event of a disaster, large-scale emergency, or major incident affecting IAFF members, the Local should contact its District Vice President immediately.

Early communication ensures the IAFF can assess the situation and coordinate appropriate support.

When to contact the IAFF

Locals should notify their District Vice President if:

  • Members are injured or displaced due to a disaster

  • A large-scale fire, natural disaster, or emergency has significantly impacted personnel

  • Mutual aid operations involve multiple IAFF affiliates

  • State, provincial, or federal assistance may be required

  • Media attention is substantial and ongoing

Timely notification helps the IAFF determine what assistance may be available.

What information to provide

When contacting your District Vice President, be prepared to provide:

  • A summary of the incident

  • Number of members affected

  • Immediate needs (if known)

  • Status of operations

  • Any anticipated media or public attention

Providing accurate, up-to-date information enables effective coordination.

Types of support that may be available

Depending on the circumstances, the IAFF may assist with:

  • Coordination with state or provincial associations

  • Disaster relief resources through the IAFF Foundation

  • Communications guidance

  • Occupational health and safety expertise

Each situation is evaluated individually.

Immediate action

In any major incident, contact your District Vice President as soon as possible.

If a line-of-duty death has occurred, follow the IAFF Line-of-Duty Death notification protocol immediately.
