The IAFF is encouraging members to help decide the future of building safety codes by applying to serve on the International Code Council’s committees. Applications must be submitted by April 1.

The International Code Council develops the model building and fire safety codes used across the United States and in many countries to construct safe, sustainable, affordable, and resilient structures.

It’s important for members to get involved in the building codes development process because those codes directly affect the safety of fire fighters’ work environments, according to Assistant to the General President for Health and Safety Sean DeCrane.

“Our work environment is not our fire station, it is the built community we respond to and operate in every day,” DeCrane said. “Serving on these committees gives IAFF members an opportunity to establish how buildings are designed, built, and maintained.

“For the safety of the citizens who occupy these buildings and for fire fighters who may need to respond to those same buildings, we would like to see our members appointed to every ICC committee,” he added.

Committee members review and evaluate code change proposals submitted for the 2030 I-Codes. There will be two groups of committees meeting in the spring and then again in the fall. Exact dates and locations will depend on committee assignments. More information can be found here.
