Senate bill would accelerate development of PFAS-free firefighting gear

The bipartisan bill would help accelerate development of PFAS-free fire fighter turnout gear and reduce occupational exposure to toxic chemicals.

Bipartisan legislation to accelerate the development of PFAS-free firefighting gear has been introduced in the U.S. Senate.

The PFAS Alternatives Act (S.4844) was recently introduced by Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-NM), John Curtis (R-UT), Peter Welch (D-VT), and Deb Fischer (R-NE). The IAFF-endorsed legislation would fund the research and development of new turnout gear that is PFAS-free, accommodates a wider range of body types, and includes a visual indicator showing when gear needs to be cleaned.

“The science is clear. Toxic PFAS chemicals are contributing to alarming rates of cancer in the fire service, and we must do everything we can to reduce fire fighters’ exposure to these carcinogens – including in the gear we wear that is supposed to keep us safe,” said General President Edward Kelly.

“The PFAS Alternatives Act will accelerate the development of next-generation, toxin-free gear, and make sure fire fighters – not corporate interests – are at the center of research into the products we rely on for our safety.”

S. 4844 was introduced with 14 original cosponsors, signaling its strong bipartisan support. The legislation serves as a companion bill to H.R. 3184, which was introduced last year by Reps. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Sam Graves (R-MO).

The PFAS Alternatives Act will accelerate the development of next-generation, toxin-free gear, and make sure fire fighters – not corporate interests – are at the center of research into the products we rely on for our safety.

General President Edward Kelly

Combating cancer in the fire service remains a top priority for the IAFF.

Fire fighters are regularly exposed to carcinogens on the job and are 14% more likely to die from certain cancers than the general public.

While PFAS chemicals were originally added to turnout gear due to their strong heat resistance, the consequences of using these “forever chemicals” have been serious. Studies suggest links between PFAS and cancer, kidney disease, reproductive damage, and other negative health outcomes.

The PFAS Alternatives Act would provide $25 million annually over the next four fiscal years to develop safe, viable alternatives to current turnout gear designs and materials. The bill also gives fire fighters a key role in the research and development process, ensuring the next generation of turnout gear meets the needs of those who will wear it.
