After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person Peer Fitness Trainer (PFT) certificate courses are returning and will now run alongside the virtual course option.
The PFT certificate course, now known as F2T 101: Fitness Principles and Practice, is the flagship course of our new Fit To Thrive (F2T) program. Designed using the latest research on fire fighter wellness and fitness, exercise science, and behavioral change, F2T 101 emphasizes the assessment, design, implementation, and leadership skills required to serve as an ambassador for wellness and fitness in the fire service.
Delivered by the IAFF’s team of Master Instructors, the in-person F2T 101 course runs over four consecutive days and involves small and large-group activities, case studies and hands-on exercise sessions. It is designed specifically for fire fighters and EMS providers employed by a fire department.
To receive a PFT certificate, participants must attend all four days of the course and successfully pass the virtual exam, which is accessible four weeks after the course finishes. Once certified, PFTs will join the F2T community comprising thousands of fire fighters across the United States and Canada.
The IAFF has streamlined the hosting application process and is working closely with several interested parties to bring the in-person F2T 101 course to districts across the U.S and Canada. The first are expected to take place in the fall of 2022. Courses with open enrollment will be listed here. Please note that space in the in-person courses for non-host departments will be limited, so we strongly encourage any interested department to consider the virtual course option. “Several departments expressed interest in hosting over the past two years, so it’s exciting to be offering in-person courses again for departments who prefer that option,” says Dave Frost, founder of Performance Redefined, who has partnered with the IAFF to deliver the F2T 101 course and the larger F2T program. Details of the in-person and virtual course options can be found here.
