In the event of a line-of-duty death (LODD), the Local must immediately notify its IAFF District Vice President and the IAFF.
Prompt notification ensures the IAFF can provide assistance, coordinate support, and fulfill required reporting and memorial responsibilities.
Information required for notification
The Local should be prepared to provide:

Member’s rank

IAFF membership number

Date of death

Cause of death (if known)

Name, address, and phone number of spouse (if married), parents (if single), or next of kin

Names and ages of children

Local union number, president’s name, address, and phone number

Local officer serving as PSOB contact

Name, address, and phone number of mayor or local jurisdiction official

Name, address, and phone number of fire chief

Name of fire department

Funeral arrangements (dates, times, and locations)
Providing complete information ensures timely coordination.
Funeral representation and memorial
The IAFF may provide representation at funeral services, including in cases involving multiple line-of-duty deaths.
Eligible members are honored through the IAFF Martin E. Pierce Commemorative Medal and inclusion in the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial.
