Los Angeles County Fire Fighters Raise $330,000
June 12, 2009 - Los Angeles County, CA Local 1014 held its 7th Annual Fill-the-Boot campaign benefiting MDA, raising more than $330,000 over three days. Top dollars raised honors go to Battalion 5 with more than $37,000. Most improved honors go to Battalion 11 with a $13,000 increase over 2008. Thanks to Local 1014 members and their families, Local 1014’s seven-year total is $2.23 million. The money raised will be used to fund services for Southern California families living with neuromuscular disease. Read more...
St. Lucie County Proclaims May 2009 Fire Fighter Appreciation Month
June 5, 5009 - St. Lucie County Commission Board Chairperson Paula Lewis proclaimed May 2009 as St. Lucie County Fire Fighter Appreciation Month. Lewis thanked fire fighters for their efforts on behalf of MDA and asked the community to be generous in their support of the fire fighters during the Fill-the-Boot campaign. Avondale Fire Fighters Get Creative to Fill-the-Boot
June 5, 2009 - Avondale, AZ Local 3924 fire fighters are creative when it comes to raising money for MDA. Brad Duell, Fill-the-Boot coordinator, and the other Avondale members donated their time on four Saturdays this spring to fill their boots at a local movie theater. In addition, fire fighters collected money near Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) during the Nascar races. Phoenix International Raceway donated tickets to Avondale Local 3924, which it sold for more than $1,000. Local 3924's total contribution this year is more than $4,600, $2,000 more than last year and $1,100 over their goal. Read more...
Small Town With Big Hearts Helps Raise Money for MDA
May 20, 2009 - It is no surprise that Surprise, AZ Local 4361 fire fighters filled their boots under the leadership of Fill-The-Boot Coordinator Ben Lundberg, who organized more than 40 Surprise members to devote their time over two weekends in April, raising $6,785 from MDA this year and s urpassing last year's amount by $868 and this year's goal by $278. Fire Fighters’ Street-Pounding Energy Raises $30,000 for MDA
May 15, 2009 - Marin, CA Local 1775 fire fighters from Larkspur, San Rafael, Mill Valley, Novato, Marinwood, Southern Marin, Corte Madera, Ross, Ross Valley and Tiburon came together as a team to raise money and awareness for MDA, proving once again to be heroes to local families living with neuromuscular disease in the Bay Area. Boynton Beach Mayor Proclaims April Fire Fighter Appreciation Month
May 14, 2009 - Boynton Beach Mayor Jerry Taylor proclaimed April Fire Fighter Appreciation Month in the city of Boynton. At the proclamation were Fire Chief William Bingham, MDA Coordinator Audrey Girardi, Boynton Local 1891 members, MDA representatives and MDA families Jacob Woodley and Lorinda Gonzalez. This proclamation followed a very successful spring boot drive held in Boynton Beach which raised $17,950. This puts Local 1891 well on its way to its annual goal of $41,000. Read more...
 
Southern California Fills the Boot
May 4, 2009— The Southern California Regional Division of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) launched its Fill-The-Boot campaign at United Fire Fighters of Los Angeles City (UFLAC) Local 112’s Station 81 on April 17. Local 112 President Patrick McOsker, Los Angeles Councilman Tony Cardenas and MDA California State Goodwill Ambassador Jordon Balla were on hand at the kick-off. Read more...

Date set for Colorado Springs Local 5 Fire Fighter Chili Cook-Off
April 22, 2009 - Colorado Springs, CO Local 5 will hold its annual Fire Fighter Chili Cook-off July 17 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. IAFF affiliates from across North America are invited to show off their best chili. The event is held in conjunction with the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Fan Fest, a large motor cross festival. Read more...

Orange Beach Fire Fighters Receive Golden Axe Award
April 16, 2009 - Orange Beach, AL Local 4309 was awarded the Golden Axe by the city for its participation in the 2008 Fill-the-Boot campaign. Each year this program benefits children, adults and families served by MDA. Fire fighters raised more than $22,000 in 2008 to help local families and children with neuromuscular disease. UFOA and UFA Add Strength to Manhattan's Annual Muscle Team Gala March 19, 2009 -- IAFF members from the Uniformed Fire Officers Association of New York (UFOA) Local 854 and the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) Local 94 partnered with MDA for the annual Muscle Team Gala in January. The event is a high-profile sports dinner where professional athletes put their muscle behind the search to find treatments and cures for neuromuscular diseases. Each athlete is paired with a MDA Buddy -- a local child living with muscular dystrophy. The fire fighters, who came dressed in Class A dress, acted as escorts for professional athletes, including New York Jets Kris Jenkins and Jay Feely; New York Giants Justin Tuck, R.W. McQuarters, Terrell Thomas and Chris Snee; and New York Red Bulls Terry Boss and Danny Caputo. Thanks to the generosity of the numerous supporters who attend the dinner, approximately $1 million is raised each year.

35-Member Local Raises $19,823 for MDA
March 4, 2009 - Ruston, LA Local 4019 has received two awards from MDA for 2008. This 35-member local is among the top five in the state of Louisiana for overall collections, raising $19,823 in 2008 -- topping last year's amount by almost $4,000. MDA also gives one award each year for the most money raised per union member. For the third year in a row, Local 4019 has won this award. This money was raised during three boot drives and an annual golf tournament. Local 4019 is gearing up for 2009 and hopes to break their record once again for Jerry's Kids.
 
Professional Firefighters of New Jersey Hold MDA Boot Camp
March 4, 2009 - The Professional Firefighters of New Jersey (PFANJ) MDA Boot Camp was held February 11 at The Ocean Place in Long Branch, New Jersey, kicking off the 2009 Fill-the-Boot campaign. Approximately 19 IAFF locals attended, along with PFANJ President Dominick Marino. Read more...
 

Kissimmee Local 4208 Recognized
January 22, 2009 - Kissimmee, FL Local 4208 had an amazing Fill-the-Boot Drive in 2008, raising nearly $27,000 under the leadership of Local 4208 President and MDA Coordinator Jim Walls and Fire Chief Robert King. Kissimmee Local 4208 provided services to 1,200 Central Florida MDA members.
 
Santa Clause Comes to Town!
January 21, 2009 - Despite bad weather, the Fairfield, CT Local held its Second Annual Santa Ride for the Muscular Dystrophy Association December 19-21. With the help of the Jolliest Old Elf himself, Fairfield’s Bravest visited more than 100 children in snowy Fairfield. The Second Annual Santa Ride raised more than $3,000 for MDA. Each year, Fairfield fire fighters hold their own Fill-the-Boot drive, raising close to $40,000 over the last five years.
 
Jacksonville Fire Fighters Raise $114,000
December 18, 2008 – Jacksonville, FL Local 122 hit the streets October 30-November 1 for its annual Fill-the-Boot Campaign. Local 122 held three events in 2008 to benefit MDA: a golf tournament with a record-breaking year, bringing in $6,397; the annual Guns N Hoses event, which raised $29,736 in 2008; and the annual Fill-the-Boot campaign, which raised $78,021. Colorado Local Has Record-Breaking Year
Fountain, CO Local 4369 is proud of breaking a four-year goal for MDA this year. Fountain Fire Fighters, led by Captain Nathan Mascarenas, were fiercely committed to raising $10,000 during the 2008 Fill-the-Boot campaign. The dedication and heart of each participating fire fighter led to an incredible $14,495 total. Read more...

West Palm Beach Fire Fighters Top Previous Record
September 29, 2008 -- West Palm Beach, FL Local 727 raised $22,021 during this year’s Fill-the-Boot drive during Labor Day weekend – a nearly $3,000 increase from last year. Special thanks to MDA Coordinator Austin Schoor for his hard work to make this year a very successful one. The amount collected sets a new record for the funds raised by the Local 727 fire fighters. Los Angeles County Local 1014 Fire Fighter Receives Humanitarian Award
September 19, 2008- Captain David Lopez was presented the first Los Angeles County Local 1014 Humanitarian Award by Local 1014 President Dave Gillotte and the Local 1014 Executive board for his work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Captain Lopez has worked as the MDA liaison for six years, planning the department-wide Fill the Boot event that has raised a combined total of more than $2 million in honor of his cousin who is currently living with ALS. Snow Falls At Idaho MDA Summer Camp
August 6, 2008 -- Alan Farnsworth, a member of Pocatello, ID Local 187, Jim Ebbers, a member of Nampa, ID Local 804 and Steve Dial, a member of Boise, ID Local 149 prove that fire fighters can deal with anything that comes their way and still maintain their great attitudes. All three fire fighters teamed up to show MDA Summer Camp camper Nick Kossman of Nampa, Idaho, that snow (yes, snow!) at summer camp is better than water balloons and boating. The snow fell June 10 during a Luau party, but everyone at camp made the best of it and had a fantastic time. Read more...
 
2nd District Fire Fighters Recognized at Kauffman Stadium
August 5, 2008 -- Fire fighters in Kansas and Missouri were recognized for their continued support of MDA and the community at the MDA 3rd annual Fire Fighter Appreciation Day at the "K." Before the Kansas City Royals game, more than 350 area fire fighters and local MDA families came together for a barbeque and games. Fire fighters were also involved in the pre-game ceremonies, with IAFF 2nd District Vice President Louie Wright and the 2008 Robert E. Palmer IAFF 2nd District/MDA Outstanding Service Award Recipient John McDonnell, a member of Omaha, NE Local 385 presenting MDA with a check for $1,010,225 for last year’s Fill-the-Boot campaign.
