The IAFF is highlighting the efforts of Oklahoma legislators and aspiring politicians in a four-part series, showcasing their dedication to advocating for fire fighters.

Mike Kelley is a retired Oklahoma City, OK Local 157 battalion chief and shift commander, running for Oklahoma State Representative in House District 60.

On April 19, 1995, hundreds of fire fighters rushed to the scene of a devastating bomb blast that tore through the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, leaving 168 dead and over 500 injured.

Among those who responded was Mike Kelley, a former Oklahoma City, OK Local 157 battalion chief and shift commander, and the Executive Director of the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association.

“I heard the impact immediately and offered to assist within the hour,” he said. “While it was a horrendous act, what remains vivid to me is the unity that emerged in the aftermath, with people from all corners of the globe rallying to meet the needs of those affected.”

I’ve been an advocate for fire fighters and public safety for over two decades.

Years later, Kelly, a familiar name in Oklahoma’s firefighting community, is running for Oklahoma State Representative in House District 60.

“I’ve been an advocate for fire fighters and public safety for over two decades,” said Kelley. “This is just an opportunity to extend my advocacy to a greater group of people.”

Kelley first joined the fire service in 1986. A staunch advocate for conservative principles, he says being a fire fighter and union leader prepared him for the challenges ahead.

“I spent most of my career as Secretary-Treasurer with Local 157 and then remained on two years after retirement in the role,” he said.

As Kelley embarks on this new chapter in his career, he remains committed to serving the people of House District 60 with the same dedication and integrity he demonstrated throughout his firefighting career.

“I have a servant’s heart,” said Kelly. “I believe that I was born to serve.”

Kelley will be participating in the Republican Primary scheduled for June 18, with a potential runoff on August 25.
