Approach

In 2005, the Beckley Fire Department set out to develop an overall wellness-fitness program with a well-defined agenda: to strengthen uniformed personnel so that their mental, physical and emotional capabilities are resilient enough to withstand the stresses and strains of life and the workplace. The Beckley Fire Department applied for and received funding from the Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) grant program. The fire chief’s is committed ensuring the wellness of uniformed personnel on the job, at home at the end of their shifts and when retired at the end of their careers.
