Responding to the Opioid Epidemic

To address the ongoing opioid problem, the IAFF has launched this online series providing an in-depth understanding of the opioid epidemic impacting the United States and Canada. This series is designed for fire service personnel and civilians.

To address the ongoing opioid problem, the IAFF – with support from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) – has launched this online series providing an in-depth understanding of the opioid epidemic impacting the United States and Canada. This series is designed for fire service personnel and civilians. Each segment includes at least one video and corresponding podcast to provide more in-depth discussion and commentary.

Since opening in March 2017, the IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery has treated more than 1,100 IAFF members struggling with mental health problems and addiction. Each member’s decision to get help not only starts their individual journey to recovery but can have a lasting impact on the surrounding family, department, community and culture.
