Over the past few years, independent research has shown that fire fighter bunker gear contributes to the high rate of cancer in the fire service. Toxic per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are applied in significant quantities to fire fighter gear. PFAS have been linked to cancer, the leading cause of fire fighter death.
Conducting a proper, safe FIRE OPS 101 event requires participants to wear bunker gear. In order to reduce unnecessary exposure to carcinogens, the IAFF is suspending support of FIRE OPS until a safe, toxic-free alternative is identified for use.
