The Interagency Board for Equipment Standardization and Interoperability (IAB) has just released a position paper addressing Evaluation of Hazards in the Post-Fire Environment.

The IAB is a formal group of emergency responders representing the public safety sectors from all levels of government and is funded through a number of federal agencies. The IAFF has been a member since its inception in 1998, and has participated in the development of this document.

While the paper is aimed at addressing the use of handheld multi-gas detectors in determining the level of required PPE to be used in post-fire environments, it also addresses decontamination issues and needed additional research.

Most importantly, it provides a number of recent studies and resources on these issues. There are links in the paper for each of these items.
