The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) has announced the availability of the Personal Protective Technologies (PPT) Conformity Assessment Docket, NIOSH Docket 237, and solicits input from interested parties. The docket is being established to provide interested parties the opportunity to provide input to the NIOSH, NPPTL strategy to address the recommendations issued in November 2010 by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in its report Certifying Personal Protective Technologies: Improving Worker Safety.

The IAFF participated in the development of this IOM report and provided extensive IAFF comments.  The report focuses on the need for a consistent risk-based approach to PPT conformity assessment.  As you will note in our comments, the IAFF was against this so-called tiered approach.

We will be providing NIOSH our comments to this docket request.  This docket will be available until July 1, 2011 and can be found at All comments will be assessed by NIOSH as part of the effort to address the IOM recommendations.

Please, note that in the IAFF comments, our efforts on our Project HEROES (Homeland Emergency Response Operational and Equipment Systems) Program were addressed.  We supplied IOM with the 3 reports on the IAFF Project HEROES program and are providing them here as well.  These
