Over the last decade, an average of 14,737 vehicle arsons have been reported, accounting for 26.5 percent of total arson fires annually.

As part of National Arson week the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is launching a public education outreach campaign to prevent arson incidents.

Research shows the motivations behind vehicle arson is similar to those of other types of arson crimes, but the most common motive is revenge.

Other motives for vehicle arsons include:

•         Concealing another crime

•         Curiosity

•         Excitement

•         Insurance Fraud/Arson for profit

•         Vandalism
