New Rochelle, NY Local 273 is speaking out against inadequate staffing and a fire incident that sent five members to the hospital while battling a house fire recently.
The local says most units are staffed with three fire fighters – one below the minimum industry standard of four. The local says not having the proper staffing resulted in fire fighters being injured and the top floor of the house being destroyed.
The local conducted an outreach campaign encouraging supporters to contact the city’s senior project manager to help boost staffing.
The IAFF collaborated with NIST showing the size of fire-fighting crews and arrival times have a substantial effect on fire fighters’ ability to protect lives and property in residential fires. Read more about the study in the Fire Fighter quarterly.
