Retiree Health Care

Most fire fighters retire long before they become eligible for Medicare and face significant healthcare needs resulting from their occupation.  As healthcare costs continue to escalate, retired fire fighters are finding it difficult to afford health insurance.

Recognizing the significant health insurance costs faced by retired fire fighters, the IAFF worked with its friends in Congress to introduce and pass into law the HELPS Retirees Act.  HELPS was signed into law in 2006, and today enables fire fighters and other public safety officers to take a tax-free distribution of up to $3000 annually from their governmental pension or deferred compensation funds to help pay for health care premiums.
