Federal Fire Fighter Retirement
Federal fire fighters
are unique in that they are the only federal employees to work mandatory,
regularly scheduled overtime. Unfortunately, the complicated system by
which the federal government calculates pension benefits fails to fully credit
fire fighters for what they earn during a normal work week. As a result, federal
fire fighters' pensions are based on only part
of their salary.
To address this
inequity, Representative Gerry Connolly (D-VA) recently introduced H.R. 3186,
the Federal Firefighter Pay Equity Act. This important legislation would
amend the retirement formula for federal fire fighters so their pension is based
on their full salary.
