IAFF-MG to Hold Fallen Fire Fighter Ride

August 8, 2006 – The 9th District IAFF-MG will host a three-day ride from Las Vegas, Nevada to Colorado Springs, Colorado, September 12, 2006, in honor of IAFF members killed in the line of duty and the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial observance.

Riders will travel more than 300 miles each day, with overnight stops in Arizona and New Mexico. Once in Denver, riders will drive up Mount Evans, which features the highest paved road in North America at 14,000 feet, and enjoy lunch at Echo Lake Lodge.

IAFF members interested in participating in the ride are invited to start in Las Vegas or join the ride en route to Colorado Springs.

The procession for the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial will begin at 11:00 a.m. September 16, 2006. The ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m.

September 15: Ride to Remember (Denver) Riders who wish to continue on to Denver for Friday’s ride, motel information is below.

Riders will meet at the front of the Holiday-Inn Denver West Hotel for a 9:00 a.m. departure for Mount Evans for lunch at Echo Lake Lodge.

SAFETY NOTE: The summit road above Echo Lake Lodge is paved, but with shear spots and a single lane only. Corners are hairpin at the top -- only riders experienced in this riding topography should carry passengers. Rock fall and severe weather can occur at any time. An early up/down prior to noon on a weekday is the best strategy. Lightning and hail are considerations, especially after noon at the top.

There is a $5 fee for the summit road above Echo Lake Lodge.

September 16: IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial

Riders staying in Denver will meet Friday at the sponsoring Hotel at 7:00 p.m. to discuss Saturday’s ride to Colorado Springs.

Riders staying in Colorado Springs will meet at Pikes Peak Harley Davidson, 5965 N. Nevada Ave., Colorado Springs, CO; (719) 278-2301.

The procession will leave from Pikes Peak Harley Davidson at 11:00 a.m. for the IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial, which begins at 1:00 p.m.
