MDA Fill-the-Boot Coordinator Jim Bussell, Rapid City, SD Local 1040 President Billy Mitchell and Rapid City Mayor Alan Hanks read a mayoral proclamation declaring the week of May 26-31, 2008, Rapid City Fire Fighter Appreciation Week.

June 25, 2008 - Rapid City, SD Local 1040 participated in its first Fill-the-Boot event taking place over the course of the three days. On-duty Rapid City fire fighters raised a record-setting $42,945 for Jerry’s Kids. With the support of the entire Rapid City Fire Department and 100 percent participation from Local 1040, this inaugural event has set the bar for IAFF locals in District 5. District 5 has set a goal to raise $282,000 in 2008.

Rapid City Local 1040 has generated numerous positive stories in the media and support from the community. Fill-the-Boot Coordinator Jim Bussell gives credit to the community of Rapid City and Local 1040. Local 1040 President Billy Mitchell describes the effort as “phenomenal,” and says he has never seen department morale so high.

On Monday June 2, 2008, the City Council of Rapid City formally applauded the department’s efforts.
