Detroit Fire Fighters Donate $31,500
February
7, 2007 - Detroit, MI Local 344 President Dan McNamara and
Vice President Verdine Pierce began the year by presenting
MDA with a check for $31,500 for Jerry’s Kids. The
presentation was held at the MDA clinic at Wayne State
University’s Physician Group - Adult Clinic at Harper
Hospital on January 18, 2007. Accepting the donation on
behalf of MDA were MDA Co-clinic directors Dr. Michael Shy
and Dr. Agnes Acsadi.
Detroit fire fighters have hit the streets
in full force to raise money for the MDA’s cause. The money
raised by these local heroes help staff MDA clinics,
purchase equipment to aid weakened muscles and pay for
children to attend summer camp. Most importantly, donations
collected during the 2007 statewide Fill-The-Boot campaign
will fund research to find a cure for these diseases.
This year also marks the 53rd year of
partnership between the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters
Union (MPFFU) and MDA. MPFFU teamed up with MDA in 1954 when
the IAFF proclaimed its support for the voluntary health
agency’s mission: Until a cure is found. Last year, Michigan
fire fighters raised a record $371,529.
Founded in 1950, the MDA is a voluntary
health organization dedicated to finding a cure for more
than 40 neuromuscular disorders. MDA funds research
worldwide including current projects at the University of
Michigan, Wayne State University and Michigan State
University. In addition, MDA operates 230
hospital-affiliated clinics across the country. Local
clinics are located at Children’s Hospital in Detroit, the
Michigan Institute for Neuromuscular Disorders in Farmington
Hills and Harper University Hospital in Detroit. Services
include physical, occupational and respiratory therapies,
genetic counseling and testing, social services consultation
and year-round patient care.
