Hepatitis D

The Hepatitis D virus (HDV), also known as the delta virus, is a defective virus that requires the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) to replicate.

People infected with both HDV and HBV tend to have more severe liver disease than those infected with HBV alone. The prevalence of HDV in the United States and Canada is very low and since the presence of HBV is necessary for HDV to replicate, vaccination against HBV also protects against hepatitis D infection.
