Fire Fighter Cancer Support Network

Cancer as a diagnosis is a frightening experience. National Fire Fighter Near-Miss Reporting Systems

The National Fire Fighter Near-Miss Reporting System is a voluntary, confidential, non-punitive and secure reporting system with the goal of improving fire fighter safety.  By collecting and analyzing information on near-miss events, improvements can be made in command, education, operations and training.  The reporting system is funded by grants from the U.S. Fire Administration and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company and endorsed by the International Association of Fire Chief, International Association of Fire Fighters.  The program is administered by the International Association of Fire Chiefs under the direction of the National Fire Fighter Near-Miss Reporting System Task Force.  The task force members include experts in the fields of fire fighter safety and near-miss reporting systems.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the Federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related disease and injury. The Institute is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  In fiscal year 1998, President Clinton and Congress recognized the need for further efforts to address the continuing national problem of fire fighter line-of-duty deaths, and funded NIOSH to undertake this effort.  The overall goal of Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program is to better define the magnitude and characteristics of line-of-duty deaths and severe injuries among fire fighters, to develop recommendations for the prevention of these injuries and deaths, and to implement and disseminate prevention efforts. These efforts are centered on the field investigation of fire fighter fatalities resulting from injuries and cardiovascular Disease.  NIOSH's National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) conducts advance research on respirators and other personal protective technologies for workers.  NPPTL’s efforts ensure that the development of new personal protective equipment keeps pace with employer and worker needs as work settings and worker populations change and new technologies emerge.  A major focus of NPPTL research is the critical need for effective protective technologies for first responders in terrorist events and other disasters.

Creating a New VISION for the Future of the Fire Service
Fire Act Funds a Multi-Organization Study Aimed at Helping Fire Departments Assess and Respond to Risks

With a second major grant of $1 million from the research section of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (the Fire Act), five top fire research organizations continue collaborating to develop tools that will help local fire departments better assess the risks in their local communities and plan to respond to them more effectively and efficiently.

The three-year project, being conducted jointly by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI), the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), will establish a technical basis for risk evaluation and deployment of resources by local fire departments and create tools the departments can use to better assess the risks and hazards in their communities; plan adequate resource deployment to respond to and mitigate emergency events; and measure their effectiveness in responding to and handling events.
