ACTION ON RESOLUTIONS

The IAFF 48th Biennial Convention will be held August 27-September 1, 2006, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, Canada.

The Convention headquarters hotel, the Fairmont Royal York, is sold out. The Sheraton Toronto Centre Hotel has only Club-Level rooms remaining. The IAFF has reserved a limited number of single/double rooms at the Toronto Hilton Hotel (across the street from the Sheraton) for $239 (Canadian). Reservations can be made online.

Click here for information on making your room reservations through the Toronto Housing Bureau. Affiliates must use the IAFF Delegate Code on the housing form -- mailed to IAFF affiliates, along with credentials -- to reserve rooms at the IAFF discount. Reservations cannot be made by the IAFF.

The Convention Call was mailed to all affiliates in February, and again in April along with credentials to affiliates that have paid their per capita dues through March 2006. All resolutions, with signature, must be received in the IAFF General Secretary-Treasurer’s office by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on July 10, 2006. Resolutions can be submitted by email or FAX; however, the signed original resolution must be received by July 19, 2006.

Email resolutions to gst@iaff.org or FAX to (202) 637-0840 or (202) 737-8484.

The IAFF has also prepared answers to some of the most frequently asked questions as affiliates make plans to attend the week-long Convention, hosted by Toronto Local 3888.

The Convention features:

  • Several high profile speakers from the United States and Canada to address Convention delegates.

  • More than 100 exhibitors will offer products and services at the IAFF exposition area in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. In addition, representatives from each IAFF department will be available to answer questions.

  • FIREPAC, the IAFF political action committee, will hold a reception Tuesday, August 29 at the Sheraton Hotel. IAFF members who are current Leadership Trust donors ($500 or more) for calendar year 2006 are invited.

  • On Thursday, August 31, General President Schaitberger will host the Presidential Gala, followed by a comedy show featuring fire fighter favorite John Caponera and ventriloquist Ronn Lucas.

  • On Friday, August 25, Toronto Local 3888 will sponsor a Fire Ops 101 event at the Toronto Fire Training Center for elected public officials and media representatives. The program includes hands-on fire fighting and rescue operations under the controlled supervision of Toronto professional fire fighters.

For up-to-the-minute updates during the IAFF Convention, members can visit the IAFF web site for complete coverage of Convention business and events.

Extensive coverage of the Convention will also be provided daily in The Delegate newsletter distributed during Convention, as well as in the September-October edition of the International Fire Fighter.

Toronto Local 3888 will assist in hosting IAFF delegates and their guests, with a number of activities, beginning with a reception on the Sunday, August 27 inside a magnificent glass-covered Galleria that is part of BCE Place, an architecturally-significant series of connected buildings in downtown Toronto that includes the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Local 3888 has developed a web site to coordinate events and bookings. In addition, the local will staff a booth throughout the Convention to answer questions and assist delegates.
