National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT) / Responder Knowledge Base (RKB)

The National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism is a non-profit corporation located in Oklahoma City that is dedicated to preventing terrorism or mitigating its effects. MIPT grew out of the desire of the survivors and families of the Murrah Federal Building bombing of April 19, 1995 to have a "living memorial." We intend to honor that desire by doing what we can to try to prevent other cities from living through what Oklahoma City had to live through. One of MIPT's major projects is the Responder Knowledge Base (RKB). The RKB is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security s Office of Grants and Training, and managed through MIPT. It has been designed to provide emergency responders with a single source for integrated information on current equipment, including organizing lists such as the InterAgency Board s Standardized Equipment List (SEL), and the Authorized Equipment List (AEL) from the Office for Grants and Training. The RKB also adds value through knowledge links, user opinions, and hints authored by subject matter experts. By integrating this information into one location, the RKB has become a go-to site for the responder community to begin answering questions such as: What equipment is out there (including searches using the SELand AEL) Has it been certified To what standard What training is needed to use it How do I pay for it Whom can I talk to that has used it.

Vendors, testing agencies, standards organizations and trainers are supporting the RKB by populating it with current data. There is no charge to them for posting their data, and no charge to the community for accessing it. The RKB is provided as a public service.

NIOSH

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) , part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is the Federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related disease and injury.  In fiscal year 1998, Congress recognized the need for further efforts to address the continuing national problem of fire fighter line-of-duty deaths and funded NIOSH to conduct independent investigations of fire fighter line-of-duty deaths.  The overall goal of Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program is to better define the magnitude and characteristics of line-of-duty deaths and severe injuries among fire fighters, to  formulate recommendations for the prevention of these injuries and deaths, and to implement and disseminate prevention efforts. These efforts are centered on the field investigation of fire fighter fatalities resulting from injuries and cardiovascular disease.  NIOSH's National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) conducts advance research on respirators and other personal protective technologies for workers.  NPPTL’s efforts ensure that the development of new personal protective equipment keeps pace with employer and worker needs as work settings and worker populations change and new technologies emerge.  A major focus of NPPTL research is the critical need for effective protective technologies for first responders in terrorist events and other disasters.
