Delegates Dedicate Per Capita for IAFF
Disaster Relief Efforts
August 30, 2006 - Following two of the worst hurricane
seasons in U.S. history, and as Tropical Depression Ernesto continues to
pose a threat along the eastern seaboard, delegates approved a 10 cent
increase in per capita to fund IAFF disaster relief operations.
The
adoption of resolution 11 ensures continued funding for disaster relief
response operations, including command centers, communications support,
medical and counseling assistance, financial assistance, housing repair
and food, clothing and transportation to members in the disaster zone.
The IAFF Disaster Relief Fund, created in 1993 to assist IAFF members
and their families throughout Florida following Hurricane Andrew,
provides immediate financial assistance to IAFF members who suffer
financial hardship as the result of a federally declared disaster or in
cases of natural or man-made disasters, such as floods, hurricanes,
tornadoes, earthquakes, fires or terror attacks.
Following Hurricanes
Katrina, Rita and Wilma last year, the IAFF immediately established
command response headquarters, and mobilized resources and support
capabilities to assist members and their families in the Gulf Region and
distributed more than $1.75 million in direct financial assistance. In
2004, after Hurricanes Charley, Francis, Ivan and Jeanne caused
widespread damage, the IAFF Disaster Relief Fund dispersed more than
$215,000 to members and their families in Florida.
