BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Thomas Hales, MD, MPH
Dr. Hales is a senior medical
epidemiologist with the CDC – NIOSH. He received his BA from Stanford
University, his MD from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and
his MPH from University of California – Berkeley in epidemiology. He is board
certified in internal medicine and occupational/environmental medicine. As a
member of CDC’s emergency response team he responded to the anthrax attacks in
WDC, hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and the tsunami in Southeast Asia. For
the past 10 years he has been the Team Leader of the NIOSH Fire Fighter
Program-Cardiovascular Component. For the past 8 years he has been a member of
the NFPA Technical Committee on Fire Service Occupational Safety. He is the
currently the Vice-Chair of ACOEM Public Safety Medicine Section and a
participant on ACOEM’s task group developing guidelines for the medical
evaluation of law enforcement officers. He completed Hazardous Material
Technician training in 2002 with subsequent annual refresher training.
