BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

John Niemiec, President
 

Captain John Niemiec is currently serving his first term as President of the Fairfax County Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics – International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 2068.  Local 2068 has a membership of 1,783 active and retired fire fighters.  It is a progressive union involved in all aspects of interest and concern to its membership.  It is also one of ten IAFF locals in North America participating in the IAFF/IAFC Joint Labor/Management Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI).

 Captain Niemiec’s work for fire fighters, paramedics, and Local 2068 has been ongoing for over two decades.  Prior to his election as President, he served as First Vice President, a position that provides a supportive platform from which to address issues of health and safety for career fire fighters, paramedics, and other public safety personnel.  Captain Niemiec also served Local 2068 as a Battalion Representative.

 In addition to working diligently to preserve and enhance the health, well-being, and safety of all Local 2068 members, Captain Niemiec continues to work as a full-time Fairfax County Fire Fighter/Paramedic.

 Prior to his current position(s), Captain Niemiec was the Health Programs Officer within the Safety and Personnel Services Division, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.  In this position, Captain Niemiec served as the Contract Monitor for the Public Safety Occupational Health Center (PSOHC) and as the senior officer in charge of health-related programs within the Department.

 One of Captain Niemiec’s proudest career achievements to date is the passage of the Infectious Disease Presumptive Bill in Virginia.  Captain Niemiec lobbied for many years to have this bill put to vote, and its passage is a testament to his dedication, passion, and skill.

 Captain Niemiec’s efforts on behalf of professional firefighters and paramedics, and the community in which he lives, have been recognized which such honors as the EAC-Don Smith Award (Outstanding service Rendered to County Employees), two Career Achievement Awards, and an Outstanding Performance Award.

 Captain Niemiec is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and a 22 year veteran of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
