Start Your Own Public Relations Program

IAFF Public Relations Manual for Affiliates
The ability to speak effectively to the media, politicians and the public is essential to ensuring fair wages, benefits and working conditions for your members. This is especially important in a crisis.

To help IAFF affiliate leaders prepare for these challenges, the IAFF has developed “On Message: Effective Public Relations for IAFF Affiliates,” filled with advice on how to develop and implement a local public relations program, prepare a communication plan and communicate with the media and the public.

"On Message" includes case studies featuring IAFF affiliates that have dealt effectively with their public relations challenges and offers tips for launching a local newsletter, developing a web site, writing press releases and letters to the editor and planning and holding press conferences and political rallies.

For more information, contact the IAFF Communications Department at pr@iaff.org or (202)-824-1588.

Access is reserved for IAFF local, state and provincial officers.

The IAFF also offers an online job aid to assist union leaders in establishing effective public and media relations programs. Click here to access the Resources for Effective Public Relations online job aid.
